Blind pimples affect a lot of people whether due to the impact it has on skin appearance or due to the pain caused by the blind pimples inflammation.
Today, we will be sharing with you all the steps for you to get rid of those pimples under the skin.
What are blind pimples?
A blind pimple refers to acne that has developed beneath the skin’s surface. When you think of acne, you probably picture blackheads (dark spots with open pores in the center), whiteheads (small white bumps under the skin that don’t have an obvious opening) or papules (red swellings or bumps filled with visible pus). Blind pimples – or cystic acne – are more serious and can’t be seen from a distance. You can only feel the lump.
You may notice a large white area under your skin that is painful to touch. The area may also be red because of inflammation (swelling) of the surrounding skin.
Blind pimples appear in areas of the skin with more oil glands, such as the face, neck, shoulders, back and chest. They can be difficult to get rid of, but can be treated with patience and care.
Why Does Acne Develop Beneath the Surface of the Skin?
In order to learn more about this condition, we reached out to the dermatologist Dr. Maram Mymoon who explains the reasons behind these outbreaks.
1- The use of wrong moisturizers: Using the wrong moisturizer for oily skin might lead to clogged pores, trapped sebum, bacteria and dead skin cells.
2- Diet: Diet plays a major role in the appearance of those pimples. Avoid overeating high-fat and high-in-sugar meals which increase the risk of developing blind pimples breakouts.
3- Strong chemical peeling treatments: Excessive at-home peels can also harm your skin and increase blind pimples.
So, if you’re looking to get rid of pimples under the skin, start by improving your daily skin care routine, change your diet, and use the right products for your skin type.
How Can You Treat Blind Pimples?
Now that you know how to avoid blind acne outbreaks, what if your skin is hiding some pimples? No worries, we got your back! Dr. Maram Mymoon reveals 5 steps that you can follow to get rid of these unwelcomed pimples going to pop up:
1- Get the right moisturizer for oily skin. Thanks to their gentle formula, moisturizers for acne-prone skin will help calm the overproduction of sebum.
2- Apply topical treatments containing ingredients that will help you dry up pimples (such as Tretinoin, Adapalene, and Azelaic acid). It can also help in reducing inflammation. To note that, benzoyl peroxide is an antiseptic that reduces bacteria on the skin. It is available as a cream or gel. A specialist will help you pick the adequate cream for your skin type according to your acne severity.
3- Use the right cleanser for oily skin morning and evening in order to clean and unclog pores which will help release all build-ups and bacteria trapped inside.
4- If you are suffering from severe blind acne, your doctor may resort to Salicylic acid or Glycolic acid peels.
We do not recommend going for Isotretinoin or antibiotics to treat blind pimples as these are usually prescribed for acne. Tea tree oil can be a gentle alternative to harsh antibiotics. It has antibacterial properties that can kill the bacteria that cause blind spots.
Applying warm compresses can open the pores, which may bring the pimple closer to the skin’s surface and create a head. The formation of a head allows oil, cells and bacteria to exit the skin.
Keep in mind that you cannot get rid of blind pimples overnight! This is why, just like any other skin condition, fighting blind pimples requires a commitment to your skin care routine.
How to avoid blind pimples?
Preventing blind pimples can be done by adopting better hygiene and skin care habits. Although cystic acne is not caused by poor hygiene, it can exacerbate your blind pimples if you wear sweaty clothes or forget to wash your face. Remember to do the following:
- Wash pillowcases and other items that touch the face regularly. Dead skin cells and bacteria can build up on fabrics, which can block pores.
- Be gentle. Look for non-comedogenic, alcohol-free products. When you cleanse, use your fingers and make circular motions.
- When you have pimples, be sure not to touch, scratch, pick or squeeze them. If you do, your skin will take longer to clear up and you increase the risk of acne scarring.
- Wear sunscreen, hats and clothes that protect you from the sun.
Blind pimples are one of the most difficult forms of acne to treat. It takes time and perseverance to get rid of the pimple while avoiding damage to the skin.
